As a doctor of nursing practice, you will be working as an advanced practice nurse. Many individuals who pursue their DNP wish to specialize in a certain arena of the healthcare industry. California universities estimate that an individual with a DNP degree currently earns about $96,000 per year. The time invested in earning a DNP more than pays off in the long run, both fiscally and in career satisfaction.

Most DNP programs in California require that candidates take the GRE and have experience working as nurses in a hospital or other healthcare setting. Candidates for these programs need to hold a four-year degree. Individuals who wish to pursue a PhD in Nursing, generally granted through the same department which hosts the doctor of nursing practice program, may be required to hold a masters degree at the time they apply for admission. All candidates will be required to submit their undergraduate transcripts.

The majority of programs in this field take four to six years to complete. The course schedules are designed with the working nurse in mind, allowing students to continue working while pursuing their advanced degrees. Many schools offer a hybrid program, with classes offering both on-campus and online sessions to best meet the needs of busy nurses.
